Installation of optical cables on power transmission towers

Installation of optical cables on power transmission towers

Optical cables on transmission towers can be installed using OPGW, ADSS, or OPAC methods, each suited to different voltage levels, tower designs, and operational requirements.Cable Types and Their Applications1. Optical Ground Wire (OPGW): OPGW combines the functions of grounding and fiber optic communication. It is installed at the top of high-voltage transmission towers, replacing or supplementing the ground wire. The optical fibers are enclosed in a metallic tube surrounded by steel and aluminum conductors, providing mechanical strength and protection against electrical interference. OPGW is suitable for high-voltage lines above 110 kV and long spans between towers, offering reliable communication and grounding simultaneously. Installation typically requires de-energizing the line, making it ideal for new lines or major upgrades . 2. All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) Cable: ADSS cables are nonconductive and can be installed near energized power lines without risk of electrical conduction. They are designed to withstand high tension and long spans, sometimes up to 1 km between supports. ADSS cables are installed below the power conductors in the telecom space using simple hardware, making them suitable for retrofitting existing lines without shutting down power . 3. Optical Power Attached Cable (OPAC): OPAC is a lightweight fiber optic cable that is lashed or wrapped around existing power or ground conductors. Installation can be performed over energized lines by trained personnel using specialized tools such as cable lashers or “Sky-Wrap” devices. OPAC is suitable for spans over 2 km and tower heights exceeding 200 m. The cable jacket is designed to resist abrasion, temperature extremes, and ice buildup, and extra fiber length is provided to prevent stress on the fibers .Installation TechniquesRoute Planning and Survey: Survey the transmission line route, assess tower spacing, and determine splice points. Obtain necessary permits and coordinate with local authorities for safety and access .Mechanical Preparation: Ensure towers are ready for cable attachment. For ADSS, install support hardware below conductors; for OPAC, prepare lasher equipment.Cable Deployment:OPGW: Lift the cable to the top of the tower and secure it as a ground wire. Splicing is done on the ground and protected in enclosures.ADSS: Pull the cable along the telecom space below conductors, securing it with clamps or brackets.OPAC: Wrap or lash the cable around the host conductor using a tug or lasher, maintaining proper tension and spacing.Safety Measures: Use trained personnel for work near energized lines. Employ devices to prevent coronal discharge and ensure proper insulation. Maintain safe distances from high-voltage conductors .Splicing and Termination: Perform splicing at designated points on the ground or in tower-mounted enclosures. Protect fibers from environmental exposure and mechanical stress.Key ConsiderationsVoltage Level: OPGW is preferred for high-voltage lines; ADSS and OPAC are suitable for lower or energized lines.Mechanical Stress: Ensure cables can withstand wind, ice, and tension over long spans.Environmental Protection: Use UV-resistant jackets and provide slack loops to prevent fiber strain.Maintenance: Periodically inspect and maintain splices, hardware, and cable integrity. By selecting the appropriate cable type and following proper installation procedures, utilities can integrate fiber optic communication into transmission towers efficiently, safely, and with minimal disruption to power delivery .
