Working principle and function of optocouplers

Optocouplers transfer electrical signals between isolated circuits using light, providing electrical isolation and protection from voltage spikes and noise.Working PrincipleAn optocoupler, also called an opto-isolator, consists of two main components: a light-emitting diode (LED) on the input side and a photodetector (such as a phototransistor) on the output side . When an electrical signal is applied to the LED, it emits light, typically infrared, proportional to the input signal. This light travels across an optically transparent barrier inside the device and strikes the photodetector. The photodetector responds to the light by allowing current to flow in the output circuit, effectively reproducing the input signal without any direct electrical connection . When the LED is off, the photodetector remains non-conductive, preventing current flow, similar to an open switch .FunctionThe primary function of an optocoupler is electrical isolation. By using light to transfer signals, it separates high-voltage or noisy circuits from low-voltage or sensitive circuits, protecting components such as microcontrollers from voltage spikes, electrical noise, or grounding issues .
