Classification Methods of Fiber Optic Sensors

Classification Methods of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors are classified based on their construction, operating principle, and the type of light modulation they use, including intrinsic, extrinsic, and hybrid types.Classification by ConstructionIntrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors In intrinsic sensors, the optical fiber itself acts as the sensing element. The measurand (physical quantity being measured) directly affects the light traveling through the fiber, altering its intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization. The light remains within the fiber throughout the sensing process, making these sensors highly sensitive and suitable for structural health monitoring and strain measurement applications .Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors Extrinsic sensors use an external transducer to interact with the measurand. The fiber primarily serves as a light conduit, transmitting light to and from the sensing element. Modulation occurs outside the fiber, which allows flexibility in sensor design and is commonly used for object detection, temperature measurement, and industrial automation .Hybrid Fiber Optic Sensors Hybrid sensors combine features of both intrinsic and extrinsic types. The fiber carries light into and out of the sensing device, while part of the sensing occurs externally. This design is useful when both high sensitivity and versatile measurement configurations are required .Classification by Operating PrincipleIntensity-Based Sensors These sensors detect changes in light intensity caused by obstruction, reflection, or absorption. They are simple, cost-effective, and widely used for proximity detection and object presence monitoring .Interferometric Sensors These sensors measure phase changes in light caused by variations in strain, pressure, or temperature. They offer extremely high precision and are suitable for vibration detection and structural monitoring .Polarization-Based Sensors These sensors detect changes in the polarization state of light, which can be influenced by magnetic fields, stress, or current. They are commonly used in fiber optic current sensors and magneto-optic applications .Wavelength-Based Sensors These sensors detect shifts in the wavelength of light due to environmental changes, such as temperature or chemical concentration. They are often used in chemical sensing and distributed sensing systems .Classification by ApplicationStructural Health Monitoring: Detects strain, stress, or deformation in bridges, buildings, and aircraft.Industrial Automation: Object detection, position sensing, and process control.Electrical Current Sensing: Faraday effect-based or magneto-optic sensors measure current in high-voltage systems .Environmental and Chemical Sensing: Detects temperature, pressure, or chemical composition in harsh environments .SummaryFiber optic sensors can be classified in multiple ways: by construction (intrinsic, extrinsic, hybrid), by operating principle (intensity, interferometric, polarization, wavelength), and by application (structural, industrial, electrical, chemical). Understanding these classifications helps in selecting the appropriate sensor for specific measurement requirements, environmental conditions, and precision needs .
