Fiber optic cable connected from outside to inside the house

Fiber optic cable connected from outside to inside the house

Fiber optic internet is installed by running a fiber cable from the neighborhood network to your home, terminating at an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that converts light signals into data for your router.External Connection to the HomeFiber optic service begins at a neighborhood distribution point, which may be a pole-mounted enclosure or an underground Fiber Distribution Hub (FDH) that splits the main fiber line to individual homes . The fiber is then brought to your property using one of several methods:Underground trenching: A conduit is laid from the street to your home, and the fiber cable is pulled or blown through it. The trench is backfilled and restored .Directional boring: Used when trenching is difficult, a pilot hole is drilled underground, and a conduit is installed for the fiber .Aerial installation: Fiber is strung along utility poles from the distribution point to your home . At the home, a small box called a Network Interface Device (NID) or fiber terminal is installed outside, where the fiber is coiled and protected before entering the house .Optical Network Terminal (ONT)Inside or just outside the home, the ONT converts the light signals from the fiber into electrical signals that your router can use . The ONT requires a dedicated power source and is typically placed near other networking equipment for efficient distribution. In some setups, the ONT and router are combined into a single device, while larger homes may use mesh systems for broader Wi-Fi coverage .Internal Fiber RoutingRunning fiber inside the house requires careful planning to avoid bends, heat, or high-traffic areas that could damage the delicate glass fibers . Key considerations include:Pathway selection: Use basements, attics, or existing low-voltage conduits to minimize cable length and sharp turns .Cable type: Residential installations typically use single-mode fiber with pre-terminated connectors (SC/APC or LC) to simplify installation .Protection: Use flexible low-voltage conduit in open wall cavities or high-traffic areas to prevent accidental damage .Securing the cable: Soft Velcro ties are preferred over plastic zip ties to avoid crushing the fiber .Connecting to the Home NetworkThe ONT is linked to your router or gateway via an Ethernet cable (CAT6 or better recommended) to ensure stable, high-speed data transfer . Fiber to Ethernet media converters can be used if connecting to outdoor devices or bridging longer distances, maintaining electrical isolation and preventing interference .Advantages of FiberFiber optic cables transmit data as light pulses, offering higher speeds, lower latency, and minimal signal loss compared to copper cables . They can support long distances without degradation, making them ideal for both internal and external networking. By following these steps and using proper equipment, fiber optic internet can be safely and efficiently installed from the neighborhood network to your home and distributed throughout your internal network.
