Relay protection distance protection diagram

A distance relay protection diagram shows the relay unit connected to current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) to measure line impedance and trip the circuit breaker when a fault occurs within a defined zone.Components of a Distance Relay DiagramCurrent Transformers (CTs): Measure the line current and provide a scaled-down signal to the relay unit for fault detection .Voltage Transformers (VTs or PTs): Measure the line voltage and supply it to the relay unit to calculate impedance .Relay Unit: Computes the line impedance using the formula Z=V/I . If the measured impedance falls below a preset threshold, it indicates a fault within a specific distance .Impedance Zones: The transmission line is divided into zones (typically three). Zone 1 provides instantaneous protection for the nearest section, Zone 2 covers the next section with a time delay, and Zone 3 acts as backup protection for the farthest section .Trip Circuit: Activates the circuit breaker to isolate the faulty section when the relay detects a fault within its designated zone .Working PrincipleUnder normal conditions, the relay remains inactive because the voltage-to-current ratio (impedance) is above the threshold .During a fault, the current increases and voltage drops, reducing the measured impedance. When this impedance falls below the relay's set value, the relay triggers the trip circuit .The relay operates based on line impedance, which is proportional to the distance from the relay to the fault. This allows selective and fast isolation of faults on long transmission lines .Zone-Based ProtectionZone 1: Covers approximately 80% of the line from the relay location and operates instantaneously.Zone 2: Extends beyond Zone 1 with a short time delay to provide backup protection.Zone 3: Covers the remaining line and adjacent lines with a longer time delay for backup purposes .SummaryA distance relay protection diagram illustrates a CT and VT network feeding a relay unit, which calculates impedance to detect faults. The relay uses zone-based protection to trip the circuit breaker selectively, ensuring fast, reliable, and coordinated protection of high-voltage transmission lines . This setup is essential for safeguarding long-distance lines against line-to-ground, line-to-line, and three-phase faults while maintaining system stability.
