Principle of Thermal Overload Relay Protection Device

Principle of Thermal Overload Relay Protection Device

A thermal overload relay protects motors and electrical circuits by sensing excessive current-induced heat and disconnecting the circuit when a sustained overload occurs.Working PrincipleA thermal overload relay operates on the heating effect of electric current. It contains a bimetallic strip made of two metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion. When the current flowing through the relay exceeds the rated value for a prolonged period, the strip heats up due to the current passing through a heating coil. The unequal expansion of the metals causes the strip to bend, which mechanically triggers the relay to open the circuit and disconnect the motor or load, preventing overheating and potential damage . The relay is designed with a time-delay feature, allowing it to tolerate short-term overloads without tripping immediately. This ensures that temporary surges, such as motor startup currents, do not cause unnecessary interruptions . The trip time depends on the magnitude of the overload and the thermal characteristics of the bimetallic strip.Construction and ComponentsBimetallic strip: Detects overcurrent by bending when heated.Heating coil: Carries the load current and generates heat proportional to the current.Contacts: Normally closed contacts open when the strip bends, triggering a circuit breaker or stopping the motor.Reset mechanism: Can be manual or automatic, allowing the relay to return to its normal state after cooling .ApplicationsThermal overload relays are widely used in single-phase and three-phase motors, pumps, compressors, conveyors, and fans. They protect motors from sustained overcurrent conditions that could damage insulation or cause permanent overheating. They are cost-effective, reliable for low-resistance circuits, and provide protection against prolonged overloads, though they do not provide instantaneous short-circuit protection .Key FeaturesOperates on sustained overload currents rather than instantaneous surges.Allows short-term overloads without tripping.Provides phase-loss protection in three-phase motors. Can be manually or automatically reset after tripping.Sensitive to temperature changes, ensuring accurate protection . In summary, the thermal overload relay is a feedback-based electromechanical protection device that mimics the heating behavior of a motor, disconnecting the circuit when excessive current causes dangerous temperature rise, thereby safeguarding motors and electrical systems from thermal damage.
