What are the specifications of the elevator electrical distribution box

What are the specifications of the elevator electrical distribution box

An elevator electrical distribution box requires dedicated circuits, shunt-trip fused panels, GFCI protection, and lockable disconnects per NEC 620 and ASME A17.1 standards.Main Power CircuitThe primary elevator circuit should be a dedicated 240VAC, 30 Amp line with 10/3 copper wiring, including a dedicated neutral and ground. This circuit serves the elevator motor and control system exclusively and must not be shared with other building loads . The panelboard should be shunt-trip fused, UL 67 listed, and rated for the voltage and current indicated on the project drawings, with a short-circuit current rating of at least 200,000A rms symmetrical .Cab Lighting and Auxiliary CircuitsCab lighting, emergency lights, and ventilation require a separate 120VAC, 20 Amp circuit using 12/2 wire, dedicated solely to the elevator cab . Branch circuits for car lights may also supply receptacles, alarm devices, and auxiliary equipment, but must remain isolated from the main motor circuit .GFCI ProtectionAll 125V, 15/20A receptacles in the elevator pit, hoistway, machine room, control spaces, and on the elevator car must be GFCI type. This ensures maintenance personnel can test and reset protection at the point of work . Permanently installed sump pumps must also be GFCI-protected, either via a dedicated receptacle or upstream device .Disconnect RequirementsA lockable, externally operable disconnect must be provided for each elevator. The disconnect should be a fused motor-circuit switch or circuit breaker that can be locked in the open position, ensuring safety during maintenance . It must not disconnect branch circuits required for cab lighting, auxiliary equipment, or ventilation.Panelboard Accessories and SafetyInclude fuse pullers and spare fuses for each rating and type installed .Ensure control wiring and accessories are integrated into the panelboard assembly.Maintain working clearances of at least 30 inches wide and extend vertically to 6.5 feet or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater, to allow safe access .Conduits in the shaft and pit must be rigid metallic and rated for damp/wet environments (NEMA 4) for safety and code compliance .Additional ConsiderationsProvide a dedicated analog emergency phone line to the machine room, with at least 10 feet of coiled excess for accessibility .Temporary power during construction should be physically separated from permanent elevator circuits to avoid interference and inspection failures .All components must comply with NEC 620, ASME A17.1, and local codes, and be clearly labeled on the panel schedule and in the field . This configuration ensures code compliance, operational safety, and reliable elevator performance, while providing proper isolation, protection, and accessibility for maintenance personnel.
