Reading Basic Information of the Optical Module

Optical module information can be read via CLI commands, SNMP, or by accessing the module's EEPROM/DDM data to monitor identification, diagnostics, and real-time performance.Key Methods to Read Optical Module Information1. Using CLI Commands on Switches Most network switches allow you to query optical module information directly via command-line interface (CLI). For example, on Huawei switches, the command display transceiver shows all optical ports, while display transceiver interface interface-type interface-number targets a specific port. This provides details such as transceiver type, connector type, wavelength, transfer distance, vendor name, serial number, manufacturing date, and whether Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) is supported. Using the verbose parameter can reveal real-time transmit and receive power, temperature, voltage, and bias current . 2. Reading EEPROM Data Pluggable transceivers (SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP28) contain an EEPROM storing a Serial-ID block (vendor, part number, serial number, capabilities) and, if supported, a diagnostics area (real-time temperature, voltage, TX/RX power). For example, Huawei devices use traps like hwOpticalPowerAbnormal or hwOpticalInvalid to indicate high/low transmit or receive power.
