The sensor converts light energy into an electrical signal, either by changing its resistance (in the case of LDRs) or generating a voltage (in photovoltaic cells) depending on the light intensity . When the light intensity crosses a predefined threshold, the module can switch power on or off to connected devices, such as lamps, LEDs, or relays.
