Manufacturing Process of Fiberglass Trapezoidal Cable Trays

Manufacturing Process of Fiberglass Trapezoidal Cable Trays

Fiberglass trapezoidal cable trays are manufactured using pultrusion of continuous fiberglass reinforcements with thermosetting resins, forming strong, corrosion-resistant, and lightweight profiles.Materials UsedFiberglass cable trays are made from fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) or glass reinforced plastic (GRP), which combines continuous glass fibers with a polymer matrix such as unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy resins . The resin binds the fibers, transfers loads, and provides chemical and thermal resistance. Vinyl ester resins are preferred for high chemical resistance and elevated temperature applications, while polyester resins are commonly used for general-purpose trays .Pultrusion ProcessThe primary manufacturing method is pultrusion, a continuous mechanized process . The steps include:Fiber Impregnation: Continuous fiberglass strands or mats are pulled through a resin bath to impregnate the fibers with the chosen thermosetting resin.Preforming: The resin-impregnated fibers pass through a preformer that shapes them into the desired trapezoidal profile.Curing: The shaped profile is pulled through a heated die, which cures the resin, solidifying the structure.Cutting: The cured profiles are cut to the required lengths for assembly into cable trays. This process ensures consistent cross-sections, high strength-to-weight ratio, and dimensional stability .Tray AssemblyAfter pultrusion, the trapezoidal profiles are assembled into complete cable trays:Ladder Type: Longitudinal side rails form a C-shape, connected by rungs to support cables.Channel Type / Solid Bottom: Profiles are joined to form a solid base, sometimes pre-drilled for ventilation or cable access.Perforated / Ventilated: Holes are added to allow heat dissipation and reduce weight . Rungs and side runners are typically epoxy bonded or mechanically fastened to ensure high load-bearing capacity and resistance to point, side, and uniform loads.Surface and Functional PropertiesFiberglass trays are lightweight (40% lighter than steel), corrosion-resistant, UV-resistant, and halogen-free . They can withstand harsh chemical environments, high temperatures, and outdoor exposure. The trapezoidal design enhances structural rigidity and load distribution, making them suitable for industrial, chemical, oil and gas, and outdoor installations.AdvantagesCorrosion and chemical resistance for harsh environments.Fire retardant and self-extinguishing properties.Low thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.Ease of installation due to lightweight profiles and modular assembly.Long service life with minimal maintenance . In summary, fiberglass trapezoidal cable trays are produced through a pultrusion-based process using high-performance resins and continuous fiberglass, followed by precise assembly into ladder, channel, or perforated configurations, resulting in durable, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant cable management solutions.
